Troubled tells the story of a group of young New Yorkers getting ready to graduate High School. You get to meet Eric, a young man who has experienced a lot of loss and disappointment. When Eric meets the new boy in school, Simon, he experiences something different and intriguing which makes him uncomfortable. The audience also gets to know Katy who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Josh. Even though there is a lot of love between them, they have a lot of things going against them. Furthermore we have Jenna, Katy’s best friend, who struggles to deal with an attraction that scares her. And finally, there’s Lola who is the heart of the group. She is always trying to fix everyone else’s problems which may sometimes be overwhelming. As an audience you also get to meet a few other characters, like Josh’s other girlfriend and Lola’s excentric parents.
The show is meant to create a discussion concerning topics which are difficult to talk about for young people. The musical brings up themes like sexual orientation, drug abuse, self-doubt and mental illness. As a writer, I hope you will enjoy the show but also find the courage to talk about feelings even when you find them scary and difficult.
All music is originally produced and written by Kelly Clarksson.
Running time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes plus a 15-minute intermission.
